It is common practice for cowards to abandon dogs outside of shelters. In Serbia, one organization that functions on little resources knows this all too well.
On his way to work one morning, the shelter volunteer noticed a cardboard box on the property. He was well aware of what that most likely meant. He walked over, having prepared himself as best he could.

A litter of puppies, about four weeks old, was found inside the box. It's likely that if they'd been brought in and surrendered properly, the entire litter would have survived.
Three babies died of heatstroke as a result of being abandoned in the heat without food or water. However, one puppy inside the box was alive!
The one puppy was panting heavily. So heavily, in fact, that he would have died in a matter of minutes.
The rescuer reached in and examined the other puppies with care. He wanted to express his gratitude. He brings the living puppy out and places him in a large bowl of water.

The puppy's tail says it all as he drinks and the rescuers apply soothing cold water to his body: thank you, thank you, thank you!
What follows is a miracle that is not shown in the video but is described in the video's description! When dogs are abandoned, shelter volunteers always search the area in case a mother dog or other puppies are nearby. They had no idea what they were in for next!
A fifth puppy had managed to wiggle her way out of the box and into a shady spot. According to the description:
"We were looking around for more of them when the little black one appeared, coming out of the canal." She was dehydrated as well, but luckily got out of the box on time and stayed in the shade."
Only two puppies survived! And, thanks to the wonderful shelter volunteers, they both recovered completely and were adopted into loving forever homes when they were old enough.

Of course, we are devastated by the owner's actions and the deaths of the other puppies. But we are also thankful that two puppies survived.
This story should serve as a reminder to everyone that properly surrendering unwanted animals is critical. We encourage you to spread the word about this story in order to raise awareness.
